Collection of the City of Seattle

This is my first painting of a dumpster. It was included in a show I did in 2002, the theme of the show was the color green in our city. And Seattle was and still is very green. I never got back around to painting any more Dumpsters again until 2007. There are times when I think it's a good idea to choose a unifying theme to work with on a body of work; in this case it led me to the dumpster as a subject. But there are times when I feel like I fall short on subjects executed under a theme and instead would rather just paint whatever feels good to paint. That will be the "Feel Good Show."

I've been collecting photos of dumpsters for awhile now, and decided to post several of my favorites. I get excited when I see one that's a different color than those that I see in Seattle, such as this light blue one I found driving from Chicago to Cincinnati. It was the highlight of driving through Indiana.

I think of my work as a diary of the mundane. Like a tourist even at
home, armed with my camera: I collect my compositions and subject
matter from my immediate surroundings, and the places I visit. I look
for strong light, and bright color – elements to excite me as a painter.
Conceptually, I am interested in the landscape of contemporary life:
the spaces, places, and things that exist around us. Landscape and
the way we as a civilization shape it are a major theme of my work.
Lately, I’ve been collecting dumpsters, an emblem of contemporary
urban lifestyle.I love the bright colors, the distressed and rusty metal. I also
find a lot of imagery when I’m driving in my car – the freeways, the
construction, bright orange pylons, piles of earth, big trucks, the
lay of the land and the road. I guess I’m a bit of an
environmentalist, and I am alarmed by the rate of speed our world is
changing right in front of our eyes.
I sometimes feel nostalgic for the old architecture and the open
fields of the past, but I also like to think of my paintings as a way
to slow down the present – a visual meditation on the world we live in.

In May of 2006; I spent 8 days in the Palm Springs - Palm Dessert Area driving and bicycling around and collecting landscape images for the paintings that follow. In the years previous I had done a series of night time images which included swimming pools at night, and then I always had this interest in perfectly manicured lawns and maintained landscape. So Palm Springs with it's golf courses and swimming pools seemed like an ideal place to satisfy my visual needs. What I found when I got there was a dichotomy between the places I had access to and what I was on the outside of.. usually a gate or a wall. I noticed water in an entirely different way too, and the green tarp fences illuminated by the sun were something new for me.

So, I took it all in. The paintings that follow are what came from my experience.
